Harmony Week, celebrated annually in Australia from March 17th to 23rd, is a time to celebrate cultural diversity and promote inclusiveness, respect, and belonging for all Australians, regardless of their background. The week-long celebration includes the United Nations International Day for the elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21st.
The IFN held its annual Harmony event on March 20th, 2025. The event bought together 40 people from across the community including elected officials from the City of Greater Dandenong, community service providers, other Interfaith Networks, representatives from the Australian Federal Police, IFN Faith Leaders and our Members.
Our time together commenced with Welcome to Country, led by Uncle Mark Brown. The Deputy Mayor, Sophie Tan officially welcomed the attendees and opened the event. Our keynote speaker Jana Favero, Deputy CEO of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre delivered a powerful, engaging and optimistic address encouraging people to continue their efforts and conversations with others so that we can all enjoy and be part of our local communities. The keynote address was followed by a dynamic community panel who shared their insights into their continued efforts around advocacy, social justice and the opportunities for communities to work together to improve social outcomes benefiting us all. The event was closed by the IFN President, Mehtap Williams, who, in addition to thanking everybody for their continued support of the IFN, also gave thanks for people’s continued efforts and commitment in making the City of Greater Dandenong a welcoming, compassionate and caring community, that opens its doors and hearts to all!
